On Tuesday, March 19, 2024, Karen left dinner for home. According to show producers, she swerved to avoid a deer and totaled her car on Oaklyn Drive in Potomac around 11:40 p.m. She was arrested that night. She now faces eight charges in connection with the accident.

“My heart completely sank,” Ashley Darby said in the preview for the Season 9 premiere. “I didn’t even understand the full extent of what happened.”

“Karen and I have been friends for a long time,” Gizelle Bryant added. “I care about her. I love her. I will be there for her no matter what she needs.”

Karen herself addressed the incident, as seen in the preview for the premiere. Read on to learn how she, the other wives, and Karen's husband, Ray, are dealing with the incident.

Karen Huger answers Gizelle Bryant's questions about the crash

Gizelle told Ashley that she would pick Karen up and take her to lunch in the opening moments of the Season 9 premiere.

“Actually, she wasn’t out of the house. So I kind of want to see how she feels.” Gizelle explained.

But Karen said she's had time to think in the month since her accident.

“Although I cannot speak in detail as the case has not yet been decided, I would like to say this: the injuries are, thank God, not life-threatening. It's my ribs and my ankle and that's it. Thank God,” Karen said in her confessional. “I know the value of life now more than ever.”

Gizelle sat down to eat and told Karen that she felt like they needed to have a “real conversation” because Gizelle didn't think Karen was doing “stupid stuff.”

“It was out of character for the Karen I know,” Gizelle told her.

But Karen indicated she was unable to elaborate on the incident or reveal whether she would go to court, telling Gizelle: “It's a legal matter.”

“You can read,” Karen replied. “Just stop. You know better. I’ll talk about it when I can.”

Karen explains how she and Ray are dealing with the crash

Gizelle also asked Karen how her husband Ray was doing after the accident.

“We're going through a lot. And I can’t blame him,” Karen said. “And I blame myself for not speaking up yet. I need him to be there emotionally, so I ask for the emotional support, which he is capable of.”

Karen explained in more detail what her mindset was during the crash.

“I think everything I'm going through contributed to my accident. Sorrow. Marital problems,” Karen said in her confessional. “It all has something to do with what emotional state I'm in at the moment and what state I was in during this incident.”

Karen also told Gizelle that her parents' deaths played a role in what happened.

“I held Ray when he was going through what he was going through,” Karen said. “Mom is passing by. Seven months later I buried my father. I never really cared about myself.”
