A person arrested outside the Trump rally in Michigan faces explosives charges

WALKER, MI – A person arrested Friday outside former President Donald Trump's rally in Walker is facing charges of possession of explosives and making false terrorist threats.

Walker Police Chief Keith Mankel said officers made a comment about a possible explosive device but did not find it.

No one was injured in the incident on Friday, September 27, and the person did not enter the restricted area of the rally, Mankel said.

The incident occurred outside Trump's rally at FALK Production, a metal panel manufacturer in the Grand Rapids suburb of Walker.

Around 1,500 people took part in the rally.

Mankel did not say whether the incident occurred before or during Trump's remarks.

It started when a person went around a police checkpoint near the FALK production and didn't follow orders to stop, Mankel said.

The person continued driving, and police began a short chase that ended when the driver pulled into an adjacent business parking lot and was arrested without incident, the chief said.

At some point, “there was a comment about a possible explosive device,” Mankel said, adding that officers did not find any explosives.

CNN reported, citing unnamed sources, that the person told police at the checkpoint that he had a bomb in the trunk.

According to a report from CNN, law enforcement found no explosives but did find lawn fertilizer in the trunk.

Kent County Prosecutor Chris Becker approved charges against the individual for false threats of terrorism, possession of bombs with unlawful intent, fleeing a police officer and resisting or obstructing a police officer.

Mankel did not release any identifying information about the person expected to be arraigned on Monday on those charges.

Mankel said the department has no further comment on the incident at this time.

The incident comes at a time when law enforcement and the Secret Service are having to step up their guard to protect Trump, the Republican presidential candidate.

Trump was injured in an assassination attempt on July 13 when a gunman shot him during a rally in Pennsylvania.

On September 15, a man allegedly camped for hours with a rifle outside Trump's West Palm Beach golf course in what prosecutors said was a foiled attempt to assassinate Trump.
