PUTNAM COUNTY, N.Y. — Law enforcement officials say a Hudson Valley man's mistreatment of birds has led to criminal charges.

According to the Putnam County SPCA, a 57-year-old Putnam County resident was arrested for neglecting four chickens, three ducks and two roosters.

On September 23, the Putnam County SPCA Law Enforcement Division met with Putnam County Child Protective Services caseworkers who reported possible animal neglect. CPS caseworkers had already opened a case involving the care of a teenager on the property when it was discovered that ducks, roosters and chickens were living in “deplorable conditions”.

After an investigation by Putnam County SPCA investigators, the bird's owner was arrested. He was charged with nine counts of failure to provide food and nine counts of neglect of confiscated animals.

The birds were all removed from the property and placed in foster homes where they are recovering.

Authorities say names and addresses are being withheld due to the nature of the case and the involvement of child protective services.
