Suspected drunk driver charged in crash that sent Edinburgh officers to hospital

AAn Edinburgh police officer was hospitalized after a “serious fleet accident” involving a driver, with officers suspecting he was drunk, the city said in a news release.

The accident occurred just after noon Sunday at the intersection of 24th Avenue and Chapin Street, the release said.

The officer's vehicle was struck on the driver's side by a Ford F-150. The news release continued that the officer is expected to recover while being transported to the hospital.

The unidentified driver of the Ford was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, the release said.

Due to the accident, the intersection remained closed to eastbound and southbound traffic until 4:49 p.m

On Facebook the Edinburgh Police Organization identified the officer as union president Juan “Jay” Hernandez.

“Prayers for our President Juan 'Jay' Hernandez, who was involved in a serious accident while on duty today,” the post reads. “Jay was transported to hospital by ambulance. Crash is under investigation, we will release his status as soon as we have one.”
