MLB gives Mets and Braves cheer warning ahead of doubleheader

ATLANTA – It was unclear whether the Mets would celebrate Monday. It was clearer when such a celebration would take place.

Before a playoff-deciding doubleheader at Truist Park, Major League Baseball asked the Mets and Braves to postpone the champagne-splattered theatrics until after Game 2, Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said.

Each club secured a postseason berth with a win in the opening game before a second game was scheduled 40 minutes after the finale of the first.

By delaying the celebration, Major League Baseball would ensure that the winner of the first game would not take the field for the second game after a loud and alcohol-filled party.

The disallowance of clubhouse festivities must have been welcomed by the Diamondbacks, who are rooting for a team to win the doubleheader – which was their only route into October baseball.

If the Mets and Braves split the doubleheader, both would make the playoffs and Arizona would be left out.
