The video shows what led to the police shooting in Sacramento in September

Sacramento police have shared surveillance video and officer-worn body camera footage showing what led to a police shooting last month. The shooting occurred Sept. 14 near Bell Avenue and Beloit Drive when officers were investigating a suspicious vehicle with expired registration. Sacramento police said two patrol officers saw the vehicle pass them before the driver suddenly parked and quickly exited the vehicle. Multiple angles from surveillance video and body camera footage show a blue Ford Explorer parked next to a stop sign and abandoned. “Where is the guy who just parked that?” An officer can be heard questioning those parked nearby. “I watched him get out of the car and walk in that direction.” Officers can be heard saying they were looking for the man who parked the vehicle because they wanted to tow it. After searching the area for a while, Sacramento police said an officer then noticed the person lying on top of a nearby RV. He drew his gun and ordered the man to get down. The body camera footage shows the man standing on the roof of the RV, then scurrying to the side and jumping off. The officer appears to attack the suspect as he lands, and a gunshot is heard in the scuffle. It is unclear whether the shot was fired intentionally or accidentally. KCRA 3 has reached out to the Sacramento Police Department for clarification. “We are thoroughly investigating the circumstances under which the officer fired his weapon during this arrest,” a police department spokesman said. After the shot was fired, the video shows officers handcuffing the suspect as he lay bleeding on the ground. “You… shot me in the head!” The suspect can be heard screaming. After a moment, the officer grabs his medical bag from his police vehicle and begins to render aid. Then the video stops. The suspect, identified as 39-year-old Santino Marez, was released from the hospital the following day and booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail on charges of using force or resisting arrest and a felony warrant. When he was taken into custody, he was not found with a weapon, police said. Sacramento police said the incident is being investigated by the Sacramento Police Department's Homicide Unit, Internal Affairs Division, Professional Standards Division and Force Investigation Team. The Office of Public Safety Accountability and the Sacramento County District Attorney's Office are overseeing and monitoring the investigation. Officials said the incident falls under the City Council's policy on police use of force as well as California Senate Bill 1421, so all relevant video and audio recordings of the incident would be released to the public within 30 days. Anyone who witnessed the incident is urged to contact the Sacramento Police Department dispatch center at 916-808-5471. Do you have photos or videos of an incident?
