Attachments

Summary:

In this report, MedGlobal examines the profound impact of the Syrian crisis on the healthcare system and the alarming rise in drug abuse in the country. This report highlights the turbulent decade following the outbreak of the Syrian conflict and also highlights a pressing issue that requires attention and action. The report paints a clear picture of experiences with drug abuse and prescription drug dependence among Syrians, with a significant number of participants reporting addiction problems. It also highlights the negative impact on individuals and communities in opposition areas, including financial hardship and daily drug use.

The study, conducted in 2022, used a mixed methods approach that combined qualitative and quantitative research methods. An online questionnaire was distributed to 478 participants, including Syrians inside Syria and refugees in other countries, as well as interviews with 27 experts and key informants, providing a comprehensive overview of the crisis. The findings show a significant increase in substance use, particularly in opposition-controlled areas, and growing concerns about prescription drug addiction. A wide range of both illegal and prescription substances are readily available in the current Syrian drug market. Conducting research in government-controlled areas presented significant challenges due to limited advertising opportunities and strict online surveillance. In response to these findings, the report concludes with policy recommendations to combat the drug abuse epidemic in Syria.

These recommendations advocate strengthening awareness campaigns, expanding access to rehabilitation and recovery centers, and introducing stricter drug trafficking regulations. Ongoing efforts to combat drug abuse in Syria, such as awareness campaigns, rehabilitation centers and legal action, are discussed but require further evaluation to assess their effectiveness. These results provide valuable insights for policymakers and organizations seeking to mitigate the health and mental health impacts of the Syrian crisis. The report calls for immediate attention to this issue to ensure a healthier and more stable future for Syria and its people.
